STEVE “CHEF” SHELTON
Sixty-two years ago he was born Steven-Dale
Shelton, but most of his Red River friends knew him-
as “Chef,” a title he accepted with humility, far his
love of cooking and the restaurant business was the
real deal. He had worked up and down the east
coast, from Connecticut and New Jersey to Florida
and eventually Texas, managing restaurants and
bars for the Sheraton organization. After a stint with
Frito-Lay in Texas; he settled in the mountains of
northern New Mexico, arriving in Red River in the
winter of 1989-90. He worked at several local
eateries (The Lodge; St. Bernard’s) before
eventually starting his own place, The -Outpost
Pizzeria, located-in the old Outpost building on
Copper King Trail.
It was his latest restaurant, however, that gained him
the feistiest and most loyal following. Oldé Tymers
was Chef’s favorite, the kind of place be dreamed of
operating. The decor was unique, a theme centering
around his love of motorcycles and, in particular,
Harley Davidsons. It reflected his lifelong passion for
scooters that began when his mother gave him a
cycle. It was that passion that nearly cost him his
life in a 2004 accident in the Moreno, Valley.
Chef is survived by his mother, daughter, brother and
sister.
A Celebration of Chefs life will be held Thursday,
