Amadeo G. Martínez, 77,
well known Community leader, passed from this life after
a lengthy illness on Saturday, September 27, 2008, at
peace and surrounded by his loving family.
Amadeo was born in San Pedro, Colorado, Sept. 17, 1931
to Aurelia and Tomas Martinez. Amadeo belonged to one
of the first pioneer families that settled in the San Luis
area. He was the oldest sibling, with brothers Edmundo
and Tommy, sisters Glenda, Casilda, Clara and Susan
surviving. Amadeo was preceded in death by his parents,
his loving wife, Pepita, his son, Lorenzo, his
grandchildren, Little Pepita Martinez, Tomas Mondragon
and Luis Sandoval.
Amadeo learned at an early age a strong work ethic, love
of family and respect of others. Amadeo carried these
ethics with him throughout his life, working to provide for
his family in good times and bad. He was a well
respected Costilla County Court Clerk and Title
Examiner. At his retirement celebration many colleagues
used the words "dignity" and "integrity" to describe
him. He was instrumental in starting the Volunteer Fire
Department for Costilla County. In 1952 he married his
high school sweetheart, Pepita whom he loved beyond
words. His surviving children are Fernando (Priscilla)
Martinez, Bernadette (Ron) Lucero of San Luis; Yolanda
(Dave) Duncan, Roberta Martinez, and Joaquin Lujan of
Alamosa.
Amadeo's greatest pleasures were the simple ones,
spending time with his children, grandchildren, great
grandchildren and family and friends. He especially
enjoyed hosting family and friends at the Cabin in El
Poso that he so dearly loved. He also enjoyed gardening,
making chicos, making chokecherry wine, fishing,
hunting and snowmobiling. His 11 grandchildren and 14
great- grandchildren were his pride and joy and when
they would walk in the door, he would light up and his joy
knew no bounds. He loved to sing and sang with the
Sangre de Cristo Parish choir. He truly loved life and
family and will be missed by those who knew and loved
him. Goodbye our precious father, you are no longer
suffering and now you can dance with Pepi in heaven.
