Martinez
12 Grand Children and 4 great grandchildren

Graduated from Costilla High School– 1950
Military:  US Army during Korean Conflict – 2 Years
Bachelors and Masters Degree from Adams State College

Retired Teacher - Taught classes in Elementary Education as well
as Industrial Arts, English, and Math in several schools and grades.
He taught in Tres Piedras, Ventero, Costilla, Questa, Encino, and
Taos.

A dedicated rock-hound, he could walk for hours looking for the next
unique stone and entertained us by identifying the qualities in each
and teaching us to enjoy the same.  He loved farming, making friends
and socializing while philosophizing about ‘most any topic.’  He was
very proud of his heritage.  The family genealogy is documented,
which he diligently updated, as he could find more information.   He
prized his genealogical memory and the connections to relatives and
neighbors from the Costilla area.

Skilled with expressing himself through his hands, he was a
craftsman in woodwork, especially Spanish Colonial furniture, as well
as drafting, and building.

He played basketball for Costilla High School…..

In the US Army he worked as a telephone lineman, serving in
Germany during the Korean conflict.  He brought his talent home
fixing phone lines for anyone that needed to fix a cut line.
He was treasurer for the Costilla Mutual Domestic Water users
Association.  He went above and beyond his duties by connecting
water for those that couldn’t afford to pay a plumber.  He worked
from the time school let out at the end of the day, until he couldn’t
see what he was doing late at night.
His property and membership with the RCCLA were his pride and joy.
Dad gave us every opportunity to learn about anything.  Nothing was
impossible.  His motto was “you are only held back by you”,
“opportunity is around every corner”, and “the shortest distance
between two points is a straight line”..

The fondest memories that dad and mom share are Eluid and Mary
Vallejos, and the Class of 65, and other family events.
They are all family and the Love is reciprocated by all.
Eluid and Mary’s family shared every summer with us as far back as
we can remember.  The Class of 65, has been family, to this day
when we meet anyone of them, it is a family reunion.
Our families shared many reunions whether it was work or play.
Thank you for the memories.

Martinez Family;
Sorry to hear about the passing of your dear
dad. He was a kind person; one of a kind.  I
remember him as "Primo" Joe (for a short
time, when I was a little gal, I thought he
was my Uncle!), as he would always come to
Costilla for some reason or another; farming,
RCCLA meetings, etc..  During those times,
he would always stop and visit my mom.  She
looked forward to those visits.  I remember
the two of them sitting on some old logs
outside talking about the "good ol days".
Where does the time go?  Unfortunately I
hadn't seen Primo Joe for some while.  Met
up with Matthew at ADAMS STATE, he
walked up to me to introduce himself as "my
cousin from the Martinez side", Of course I
already knew who he was as he has many
characteristics of his dad.  I thought that was
kinda cool.

My mom always speaks fondly of Joe.  May
your family find peace during the loss of your
beloved dad, grandpa, husband and brother.
The world was a better place because of him.

God Bless You.
Love;  The Bishops (Kathy, Hal, and Kiera)
Granddaughter of Eliu Martinez; daughter of
Carlos & Olga Trujillo.
